PALIO DI SIENA IN COLOUR
Palio di Siena is a festival of colour, beauty and tradition. Three days of practice and celebration of the contradas, chanting their songs and inviting the challenge to the others. The day of the Palio begins with a parade and ends with a 90 second race to the finish and to the pride of your contrada you collect the winners banner, you dont belong to a contrada you are a contrada. Pure passion, pure dedication, pure Italian, pure Siena.

Chiocciola is situated in the south-western corner of Siena. Traditionally its residents worked as teracotta makers. Chiocciolas symbol is a snail surrounded by roses. The Contrada’s motto is “With slow and deliberate steps, snail takes to the field to triumph”.
In the Early mornings of the week before the two Palios in July and August, the Piazza del Campo in Siena is alive with activity as the beautiful horses are brought in to acclimatise to the sights and sounds of the square and to soak up the atmosphere before race day.

On Sable Island, each Stallion has his own band of mares which he protects with all his instinct and power and when the time comes where he no longer can, the natural order of things takes over and a younger fitter model will succeed him. The alpha mare however is ultimately in charge, as that is what works best with the herd.

The She Wolf of this Contrada refers to the legend that Siena was founded by Senius and Aschius the sons of Remus, who was raised by a wolf. Lupa has no allies among the other Contradas.

Only one Contrada di Siena has changed its name over the centuries, that one is Leocorno which used to be Unicorno.
The only historical rivalry for Leocorno is the one with the Civetta Contrada that dates back to the end of the fifties which relates to the border issues between the two Contradas.

La Mossa is the starting area marked by two ropes. The 10 jockeys and their horses line up in an order determind by a lottery held just before the race.
