Platinum Palladium
There is nothing quite like the beautiful reveal of the platinum palladium process. It brings out all the rich tones of an image and creates something that will never fade, the preferred method of master photographers since its invention in 1873, and still just as mesmerising today.
Among these is a print of Stuart, aka The Spiritual Gangster. He was named after a very close friend of his owner, a man with a very special place in many people's hearts, who sadly died the same day this black stallion was born.
Cyanotype Toned with Yerba Maté
A little witchcraft is required for these prints. First a traditional cyanotype contact print, then the magic ingredient, yerba maté, more than a tea, a ritual of friendship and quiet contemplation integral to life in Argentina, Uruguay and much of South America. It takes a couple of washes to reach the perfect colour, but the reveal of each original print is very special.
Horse Washing is printed on Hahnemühle Sumi E, the others on Hahnemühle German Etching.
Sable Island Choices, Salt Prints
William Henry Fox Talbot invented the salt print in 1839, the first time photographs could be reproduced from a single negative. The paper is prepared in a salted solution, dried, then coated with a silver solution, and the finished print has a beautiful chocolate brown quality.
It is instinctively the right process for an edition from Sable Island, home to a band of 500 wild horses sustained by the island's freshwater pools. With no trees and little shelter the island is unforgiving, yet the horses thrive, their resilience mirroring the stark beauty of the landscape.
Palio di Siena, Colour Giclée Prints
The Palio di Siena is a festival of colour, beauty and tradition, three days of practice and celebration of the contradas, chanting their songs and issuing the challenge to the others. The day of the Palio begins with a parade and ends with a ninety second race, the winning contrada collects the banner. You do not belong to a contrada, you are a contrada. Pure passion, pure dedication, pure Siena.
Black & White Giclée Prints
I never tire of black and white images. This selection gathers my favourites from over the years; they look fantastic 2.5m wide and equally as a small detail on a favourite wall.
Flower Power
On another note completely, the flowers, my guilty pleasure, shot on film, slowly and carefully, then printing two negatives together to produce something original and intriguing, something that makes you look twice.
